This policy explains what personal data the Ravix Games website collects, why, and the choices you have. We've kept it as plain as we can.
1. Who we are
This website, ravixgames.com, is run by Ravix Games Studio ("Ravix Games", "we", "us" or "our"), an independent games studio based in the United Kingdom and the developer of Descent: Into the Abyss ("Descent").
For the purposes of UK data protection law, including the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018, Ravix Games is the controller of the personal data described in this policy. You can contact us about anything in this policy by email at contact@ravixgames.com, or by message on our Discord server.
2. The short version
- You can browse this website without telling us who you are.
- We don't use advertising or tracking cookies, and we don't sell or share your data.
- If you sign up to our newsletter, we use your email address only to send you news about Descent. You can unsubscribe at any time.
- We may count visits anonymously, without cookies, to see which pages people read. You can turn this off.
- Our fonts, images and videos are served from our own website, so no third party sees you just because you visited.
- If you apply for a role, we receive what you type into the form, through a private channel on our Discord server.
- Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs to run and protect the website.
3. What we collect and why
When you browse the website
When your browser requests a page, our hosting provider automatically receives technical information that every website receives: your IP address, the date and time, the page or file requested, your browser and device type, and the page that referred you. This is used to deliver the website, keep it secure and fix problems. We do not use it to identify you or build a profile of you.
The website also stores a small amount of information on your device, as described in our cookie policy. Optional storage is only used if you agree to it.
When you apply for a role
Our careers form collects:
- the role you're applying for, your name or handle, and your Discord username (required);
- your CV or résumé (required for art, animation, audio, design and engineering roles, optional for others), including whatever personal details you choose to put in it;
- your email address, portfolio or social link, timezone, the hours you can give, and what you tell us about yourself (optional);
- your confirmation that you are 18 or over, and that you understand how team roles work.
We use this to consider your application, contact you about it (normally on Discord), and, if you join the team, to set up your agreement and access. Please don't include sensitive information, such as health details, in the form or your CV. We don't need a photo, your date of birth or your home address, so feel free to leave them out.
When you press "Send application", your browser sends the form, and your CV as an attached file, directly to a private staff channel on our Discord server using a Discord webhook. Only members of the Ravix Games team with access to that channel can see it. A fallback version of the form may send it through our hosting provider instead, which forwards it to the same channel without keeping a copy.
When you sign up to the newsletter
If you enter your email address in one of our newsletter forms, we use it to send you occasional emails about Descent: dev logs, first looks, playtests and release news. We also record the date, the page you signed up on and the language of that page.
Our newsletter is sent with Buttondown, an email service, which will email you to confirm your subscription and includes an unsubscribe link in every email. Until our Buttondown account is set up, sign-ups are delivered to a private staff channel on our Discord server and moved to Buttondown when it is.
You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email, or by asking us. We'll then stop emailing you and delete your address from our list.
Anonymous visit statistics
We may use GoatCounter, a privacy-focused statistics service hosted in the European Union, to count how many people visit each page. It records the page, the referring website, your screen size, browser and country. It doesn't use cookies, doesn't store anything on your device, doesn't store your IP address in a way that identifies you, and doesn't track you across other websites. You can turn it off in "Cookie settings", and we don't count you if your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal.
When you contact us
If you message us on Discord, social media or by email, we receive your message and whatever profile details that service shares with us, and use them to reply.
4. Our lawful bases
| What | Why | Lawful basis (UK GDPR Article 6) |
|---|---|---|
| Server logs | Delivering and securing the website | Legitimate interests: running a safe, working website |
| Strictly necessary storage | Remembering your cookie choice; limiting repeated form submissions | Legitimate interests; exempt from consent under PECR as strictly necessary |
| Applications | Considering you for a role and contacting you | Steps taken at your request before entering into an agreement, and legitimate interests in recruiting a team |
| Newsletter | Sending you news about Descent | Consent, which you can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing |
| Visit statistics | Understanding which pages are useful | Legitimate interests, with an opt-out in Cookie settings |
| Messages to us | Replying to you | Legitimate interests in responding to enquiries |
5. Who we share it with
We only share personal data with the service providers we need to run the website and the studio:
| Provider | What they handle | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Discord Inc. | Applications and CVs sent through the careers form, and messages you send us on Discord | United States |
| Our website hosting provider | Server logs, and applications if the fallback form route is used | May include the United States |
| Buttondown | Newsletter subscribers' email addresses | United States |
| GoatCounter (if enabled) | Anonymous visit statistics | European Union |
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the rights, safety or property of Ravix Games, our community or others. We never sell personal data.
Links on this website to TikTok, Instagram, X, Bluesky, Medium and Discord take you to services run by other companies. Their own privacy policies apply once you're there.
6. International transfers
Discord, Buttondown and potentially our hosting provider process data in the United States. Where personal data is transferred outside the UK, we rely on a lawful transfer mechanism, such as the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework (the "UK–US data bridge") where the provider is certified, or the International Data Transfer Addendum to the European Commission's standard contractual clauses, which these providers offer in their terms.
7. How long we keep it
| Data | How long |
|---|---|
| Applications and CVs | Up to 12 months after we've made a decision, then deleted from the Discord channel. If you join the team, the details we need move to your contributor records for as long as you work with us, and are handled under your agreement. |
| Newsletter | Until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove you. |
| Visit statistics | Anonymous counts kept for as long as they're useful; no individual can be identified from them. |
| Server logs | Kept by our hosting provider for its standard period, typically no more than 30 days. |
| Messages | As long as needed to deal with your enquiry, then in line with the service's own settings. |
| Storage on your device | As set out in the cookie policy. You can clear it at any time in your browser. |
8. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- have your data erased, for example by withdrawing an application;
- restrict or object to how we use your data, including where we rely on legitimate interests;
- data portability, where it applies; and
- withdraw consent at any time, where we rely on consent. For this website, use "Cookie settings" at the bottom of any page.
To use any of these rights, contact us by email at contact@ravixgames.com, or by message on our Discord server. We'll respond within one month. We may need to confirm it's you, for example by replying from the Discord account you applied with.
9. Children
This website is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their personal data. You must be 13 or over to sign up to the newsletter. You must be 18 or over to apply for a role. If we learn that someone under 18 has applied, we'll delete the application.
10. Security
The website is served over HTTPS. Applications go to a private staff channel that only the team can access, and we limit how often the form can be sent to reduce spam. No method of sending or storing data online is completely secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect what you share with us, and only the people who need it can see it.
11. Complaints
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, please tell us first so we can try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the UK's data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
12. Changes to this policy
We'll update this policy when the website or the way we handle data changes, and change the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll make it clear on the website or our Discord.
